Into the Light: Photos Of The NYC Gay Pride Parade From The 70s Till Today

Into the Light is the title of Stanley Stellars magnus opum: a history of the New York Pride Parade from the 1970s until today.

The Brooklyn-born photographer (who belongs to the same generation as Robert Mapplethorpe) is a chronicler of the city that nevers, and so it seems his camera neither rested a single moment. As art collector and museum founder Charles Leslie put it, Stellar is a living witness to the urban drama which spanned the years from 1969 to the present and his imagery reconfirms the centrality, in spite of everything, of eternal male beauty.

A true treasure of cultural history, the photographs in this book not only reflect the individual people taking part in these parades but also give an idea of the social impact the gay movement had and has. Carefully selected and accompanied with Stellars own words, each photograph is an artifact of a special place during a special time: the hedonistic 70s, the devastating 80s after the rise of HIV/AIDS, the plastic 90s, and the new millenium until today.

Into the Light is a unique contribution to gay history.

About the Photographer

Stanley Stellar (b. 1945 in Brooklyn, New York), an artist who belongs to the same generation as Robert Mapplethorpe, began his work around the same time, after spending years working as an art director. Stellar was educated at Parsons School of Design where he focused on graphic design and photography. Influenced by Peter Hujar and other artists exploring homoerotic subject matter in New York City, Stellar realized photography could provide a great means of talking about the gay experience. His interest in reaching as broad an audience as possible and getting into peoples consciousness led him to create post-cards.

Indeed, his documentary images of gay life from the 1970s impress themselves indelibly on the viewers memory. A matter-of-fact objectivity and formal elegance is belied by a pervasive sense of soul, something that Stellar achieves so naturally, even in his earliest photos. His professional career produced innumerable book designs, editorial desings and art direction for numerous magazines and publishing housese, and many gallery shows of his art photography in the U.S. and in Europe. He lives and works in New York City.
