Back in the days when comic book movies were solely limited to Superman sequels, and when portable music meant Walkman cassette players, lesbian loving was often relegated to a single event in a standard five scene fuck flick, plopped in the middle of the movie to break all the guy-girl pairing monotony. While usually enjoyable, performances varied greatly because the female pairings were so contrived and forced as part of the so-called plot, some of the scenes just seemed too unnatural. (Example: Blonde girl fucks boyfriend in scene one. Brunette fucks her guy in scene two. For whatever reason, each girl is unsatisfied with their respective relationships. The two girls get together somehow, share their thoughts on sex, and quickly get frisky. Two more heterosexual vignettes later, and the credits roll.)

Eventually, videos specializing in Sapphic sex were produced as a sub-genre of adult. But even the most popular and longest running series like Vivid's Where The Boys Aren't didn't quite hit the mark all the time. Sure it was great to see Savannah and Jamie Summers getting it on, but the direction was often clumsy and endless amounts of time was devoted to oral sex and foreign penetration (either by way of a dildo or fingers). Foreplay was nearly nonexistent, and any other act of intimacy such as stroking, fondling, caressing, and massaging were rarely seen. Naturally, what we were witnessing was lesbian lust as interpreted by male pornographers (though many of the early WTBA episodes are credited to "Judy Blue," longtime film maker Paul Thomas was the nom de plume behind the camera).

Currently, the majority of girl-girl videos have moved away from the traditionally dull contrivances and into more extreme action, oftentimes focusing on bondage with exotic devices. The downloadable Seymore Butts' Tushy Girls Slumber Party, for example, is basically one big orgy, where dildos, prosthetics, Sybian machines and vibrators dominate. There's a lot of stunning, exciting action going on, but passion takes a deliberate backseat. Likewise in Jenna Haze Dark Side, the lesbian affair between the featured starlet and Tory Lane takes on a domination theme, complete with latex body suits, masks, and overall rough sex. It's all hot and heavy stuff, but not necessarily the model of true girl-girl loving.

Viv Thomas videos, however, stand out because there is a natural chemistry between the women, which is probably no less contrived, but far more convincing. One of the main reasons why is due to how they perform the most simple of common acts: kissing. We are all too familiar with girls kissing girls too tepidly, or with too much faked aggression, or with the robotic flickering of the tongues like spastic lizards. In adult videos, kissing is far too personal and intimate a gesture for these most of these girls, which explains why most of the lip-locking we see is often cold and clinical. With the exception of superior performers like Sasha Grey, Francesca Le, Ginger Lynn, Tianna, April Flowers, Sunrise Adams, Lauren Phoenix, most adult actresses simply either don't like to kiss or can't do it convincingly. The performers in Viv Thomas productions are an exception.

Finally, just because Viv Thomas films emphasize passion, intimacy and extended periods of foreplay, don't assume that the sex is less athletic or graphic. Indeed, in Weekend With Vera, dark-haired Kathy Moore seduces and devours the petite starlet on a large bed. Despite being considerably smaller than Miss Moore, the unbelievably cute Vera (who looks so much better in her natural brown tresses than her bleached blonde appearances from videos like Six Days With Vera) is able to handle her aggressive partner with ease, and the two indulge in enough analingus to please the most ardent butt-man. Unlike some over-the-top girl-girl affairs, the action rarely goes over-the-top or degenerate into outrageous silliness. I'm no expert on lesbian behavior and conduct, but the chemistry between most of the girls seems genuine.

And so, Diesel's Den concludes his look at Viv Thomas productions with a quick-six (actually seven) pick of his personal favorites:

THE ART OF KISSING - Fewer things in life are more arousing than to see two beautiful women, locked in an embrace and licking lips and sucking tongues. As stated before, every Viv Thomas film features extensive kissing, but this title (and the "sequels") elevates it to an art form. We begin with dark-haired goddesses Peaches and Eve Angel passionately making out while kneeling on a bed (see the box cover for a little preview). The caress, grope and stroke each other endlessly, before Peaches gently pushes Eva back for a little private time with her privates. Four additional scenes round out the two-hour running time, including pairings between Cameron Cruise and Sandra Shine, Monica Sweet, and Sylvia Laurent, Dana Kelly and Jamie Hunger, and finally Judith Fox and Kylie. Cameron Cruise looks especially good in her scene, wearing blue jeans and a red top, while Monica Sweet and Sylvia Laurent generate especially genuine onscreen chemistry together as they orally devour each other on a couch. Whenever I suggest a Viv Thomas video to anyone, The Art Of Kissing is the first one I recommend.

YOUNG LESBIAN LOVE - Sex in a sauna, by the pool, in the pool, in a gym and on a bedroom. This flick pretty covers a lot of ideal locations where fit and slender women seem to enjoy hanging out. I personally enjoyed the Mia Stone and Eve Angel getting all wet and wild under a sunny sky. Mia laps lovingly at Eve's quim while on a patio chair, and Eve returns the favor when they go for a dip in the pool.

THE OFFICE GIRLS - As of 2009, petite and gorgeous Dana Kelly has worked in adult for close to ten years, but has appeared in fewer than thirty releases (including a few titles for Hustler and Wicked Pictures). Her blonde alter ego as "Vera" in Babes From Budapest and Six Days With Vera has already made her instantly recognizable to longtime fans, but she shines brightest under the limelight as a brunette. In The Office Girls, she becomes the object of affection among competing associates, all of whom are willing to engage in sexual "harassment" in order to achieve sexual satisfaction. This feature is also notable for an early appearance by Nelly, whose dark-hair and sultry great looks are a perfect complement to blonde beauty Helena. Their desktop seduction is worth the price of admission alone. Be sure to look out for the bonus features, which includes a hot and heavy makeout session between Cameron Cruise and Miss Kelly. Words fail to describe the sheer awesomeness of watching these two kiss, lick and suck like drunken girls gone wild.

PINK VELVET 3 - I can't think of too many lesbian titles that offer so much for the money. Viv Thomas packs in seven scenes filled with eight gorgeous women who only have eyes for each other. Of note is Cameron Cruise's scorching seduction of Lolita in a hot tub. Lolita is a bit shy and resistant at first, but Ms. Cruise manages to coax her into submission. If you have a special place in your heart for wet and wild brunettes with a touch of MILF thrown into the mix, then this is a scene to behold and cherish.

VIV'S DREAM TEAM GIRLS - Do you like watching stunningly cute, all-natural and petite fresh-faced blondes in tight shorts making out, masturbating, eating pussy, finger-banging, sixty-nining with a little gentle anal play thrown in at the end? If not, then please skip over the opening scene with Sophie Moone and Sandy and enjoy the remaining four scenes which feature some of the best combinations since peanut butter and chocolate. Gina B. and Peaches kiss superbly on an outdoor bench, and then eat each other out on a picnic blanket laid out on a field of grass. Afterwards, Brigitte and Eve Angel prefer the comforts of a living room couch for a few intimate moments, while Dana Kelly satisfied Jamie's "Hunger" on a king size bed. Finally, we're back in the great outdoors with Dorina and Sandra Shine swapping spit and sucking clit on a blanket under a shady tree. Though it would have been nice to have a threesome (or more) thrown into the mix, the team-ups here will bring a flood of wet dreams to come.

UNFAITHFUL 1 & 2 - Cameron Cruise once again plays "Lisa", a thirty-something brunette who is mature, sophisticated and horny as hell for a younger girl played by Nella (billed as "Nelly" in this series). Their love affair is soap operatic in nature, with all the emotional conflicts one might expect from high melodrama. Likewise, the sexual acts are slow, seductive, and incredibly passionate, and the direction and videography stay in tune with the approach. With a total running time of nearly five hours, viewers will be surprised to find out that there are "only" three scenes in part one, and four scenes in part two. Yet, with a supporting cast including Mya Diamond, Ariel, and Peaches, you get more carnal quality for your time than most lesbian flicks deliver in a whole series. Available as an "Empire Bundle", this two flick deal is too good to pass up.

Is every Viv Thomas flick worth collecting? Well, strangely enough, not all is perfect in the world of porn; not every Andrew Blake title engages the audience; not every Jenna Haze scene hardens the cock; and certainly not every Ron Jeremy solo masturbation performance begs repeat viewing. However, as far as consistency in fresh and easy-on-the-eyes lesbian performances are concerned, I cannot recall any other director who succeeds as well as Mr. Thomas. I'm a fan for life, and I'm sure you will be, too.
