Best known now as the tattoo-covered blonde vixen who has starred in adult films such as Pirates, Mrs. Behavin', and Maneater, Janine has also graced the pages of Penthouse, where she was the December Penthouse Pet of the Month.
However, Janine has done more than just adult films - she had a role in Bersaglio sull'autostrada, an Italian film, that also starred Linda Blair (of The Exorcist) and was known as Moving Target in English-speaking countries. She also starred in Spring Break USA and Caged Fury, but it's safe to say that Janine has found more fame in the adult film industry than in the mainstream film industry.
In 1992, Janine had her start in the adult industry with her role in Hidden Obsessions by Andrew Blake, and soon after, she had signed a contract with Vivid and had become a Vivid Girl. She decided to film only with other female performers, but that didn't make her any less popular with her audiences. While at Vivid, Janine was featured in over fifty films, but she did more than just star in adult films. She and fellow porn star Julia Ann formed Blondage, an exotic dancing duo, and she also had a role in the Howard Stern film Private Parts. Janine was also the model featured on the album cover for Blink-182's Enema of the State. Janine was everywhere, but that would change in 1999.
Janine announced her plans to retire in 1999 because she wanted a change in career, and the career she was interested in pursuing was that of a kindergarten teacher. She also felt that she needed to focus on being a mother to her son, who was 8 years old at the time. Janine had several relationships, including a marriage that ended in 1996, but she found love again, albeit briefly, in 2002 when she married Jesse G. James of West Coast Choppers fame. The couple divorced after James left Janine for Sandra Bullock while Janine was seven months pregnant.
After giving birth to a little girl in January 2004, Janine made her comeback to the adult industry in April of that same year and signed a contract with Vivid again, but this time around, she stated that she would be working with both men and women. Once her contract with Vivid expired, she signed on with Digital Playground to star in several films, including the very popular Pirates. She announced again in late 2005 that she would be retiring again, but this retirement was much shorter than her first one because she came out of retirement in 2006 after winning 2 AVN awards.
While she may be in retirement again for now after shooting what was touted as her final film, Pipe Dreams, we look forward to what the future holds for Janine, and we take comfort in the fact that we can continue to enjoy her large filmography for whatever length of time we have to wait until she comes back again.

Interview with Janine - January 9, 2001
Adult Entertainment Expo 2001 in Las Vegas NV
Pornstarempire.com: First, I wanted to ask you if going brunette was an effort to separate yourself from your "Blondage" identity.
Janine: No, that didn't even occur to me. At the time of changing my hair color, I had just turned 30, and I think that's what is was. I liked it for a while, then I kind of got freaked out, then tried to go back to blonde - that didn't work too well. That's when my hair got real, real short, kind of broke all off. ...I'd like it to go back to the natural color and that is kind of a mousy brown, undescriptive kind of shade.
Q: I like what you've got going on now with the flames [in front].
Janine: Yeah, this is kind of my dated 'do.
Q: I always thought it was interesting how people feel differently or get a different response to being a blonde from being brunette. I felt I was taken much more seriously as a brunette than a blonde.
Janine: ...It was a shocker for a lot of people at first. A lot of them were like, "No, we want you blonde--you gotta be blonde, blonde, blonde--we need you blonde." It wasn't for me anymore. I know just on the street, when you're driving your car, you get a lot less attention. So actually, I like that, because I don't crave that much attention. I get enough.
Q: I heard that there was a certain significance to your tattoos, and I also heard that my old boss...[at a strip club] asked you to cover them up when you danced.... Anything you want to say about that and what made you decide to become as tattooed as you have?
Janine: When I decided to retire from making movies, I went ahead with getting more tattoos and it was something I had wanted to do for a long time. I'm still nowhere near being done. I enjoy them, I like them, and I like people who have them. I like what they represent for me. I knew it would be difficult for people to see me with tattoos. They don't like things to change - they like the blonde, they like the no tattoos--they like things to stay the same...and that's just not me. I'm constantly changing, as we all are. But I knew it was gonna be a problem for dancing and some club owners. It was just a chance I had to take. I can't live my life as a little doll...as a product. For the most part...the response has been okay. In fact, guys are seeming really to like it and make a lot of comments. It's part of what's happening now, and women are kind of standing up for themselves, and demanding to be reckoned with.... Unfortunately, ...[that club owner] asked me to cover them up and I refused. He seemed to think that he knew my fan base. He thought that my fan base was older men that like the older ways, which, that's what he is. And I said, "You're wrong." I know my fan base and I know I've got...the 18 year-olds that know me from Blink 182 and I've got the...married couples - women love me, and older guys too. If I thought it was affecting my money or my performance, I would cover it up. But it's not, so I'm gonna stick to my guns.
Q: You seem like the most wonderful lesbian lover ever; you bring a certain warmth to lovemaking with women that I think is missing in all the other scenes that I've witnessed. On the basis of this, I was very surprised to hear that you were less emotionally interested in women, relationship-wise. Please give me a comment about your sexuality, your feelings about women, how that's evolved.
Janine: Well, I've never been in an emotional relationship with a woman. I can see how it could happen.... I'm not opposed to it, it just hasn't happened. I adore women, I like what women are about--I wish there were more women that could connect, whether it be on a spiritual level or whatever level, we need to stick together.... Doing scenes in movies, it wasn't just the sex itself. There was a bond there, and I think only certain women can know what I'm talking about.... It was what I enjoyed the most from doing girl/girl scenes. ...Maybe one day I'll be in a very happy steady relationship [with a woman]. I've been very fortunate with the women that I get to work with in films. I get to choose, and it's not just, "well this is a beautiful chick," well, yeah, that's all well and good, but I really look for...I gotta see something inside that's gonna connect with me. ...There is tenderness and emotions.... And there've been many times during a scene where I wanted to take it in a different direction, toward real-life-women-lovemaking, but unfortunately, you've got to stand on your head, you've got to do all these crazy positions.... That was kind of a mood-killer sometimes. I think women make love a lot [differently] in real life than is portrayed in movies. ...I hope that one day there's a line that caters to real women and their lovemaking styles.
...[Porn] was kind of a fantasy world [for me].... I'm shy. I was never the type of girl to go to a bar and say, "Oh, hey, baby, wanna come to my place?" So this was kind of an outlet, where I got to meet women and we were the same in many ways.
Q: You come across as so mature and I don't mean old, because even in the early movies I felt you had a certain poise and maturity about you, where you seemed like a grown woman as opposed to a misdirected girl who winds up in porn. So why porn for you?
Janine: You know, I don't know. I think I'm very torn on [why].... It was a fantasy job and it was acting out something that I needed and wanted to experience. But at the same time, it's tough. It's tough to live your daily life with this notoriety. ...If I had to turn back the clock and do it over, I would think about it. Not that I'm knocking it, ...it was so much fun and I learned a lot...but you can't close the door on it, you can't walk away, because till the day I die and beyond, I'll be known for porn, and that's kind of unfortunate.... I don't know why I went down that path....
Q: What had you expected to do?
Janine: The very first time that I posed for a magazine or even thought about dropping my clothes, I was 18, right out of high school, wanted quick money to get married...wanted to get up and out of the house away from my parents and on my own with my new husband. It just kind of snowballed from there. People say, "You marketed yourself so well," and I never really made an effort--it was just kind of a fluke thing.... It wasn't something I really took seriously, I just wanted to play and experience and I just sort of blew up, there.
Q: Did you start out dancing?
Janine: No, the very first thing I did was a test-shoot for Penthouse and it was used for a centerfold. From there...I started dancing and featuring and on and on.
Q: Do you enjoy dancing? Do you still tour?
Janine: Yeah, there's a part of dancing that I do enjoy--a big part that I don't. I still go out and tour occasionally, but that's starting to taper off and I'm gonna get my butt back in school and learn something else...next year.
Q: Do you know what you'll study?
Janine: Not yet. But it's my New Year's resolution.
Q: I was very impressed with the "Blondage" footage I saw in the movies. I thought the showgirl aspect of it was real exciting and it was great to see it as part of the films.
Janine: We had a great time with "Blondage", dancing together. We did that for about seven years and it was very sort of theatrical...it was fun. We brought a little bit of that to the movies. It's hard to make it come across on film the way it did onstage, but we did the best we could.
Q: Do you think...["Blondage" is] dead and buried?
Janine: Actually, Julia [Ann] and I talk occasionally and we do bring up whether we want to do one last [stint]. We might one day.
Q: When I saw the "Blondage" movies, I certainly had the impression that you were lovers off-screen.
Janine: With Julia, she was the first woman that I had a sexual relationship, and that happened before "Blondage" was even a thought. I was 19, she was 18 and we started off right away, playing with that type of stuff. Then it sort of evolved into more of a friendship and we...go-go danced and cream-wrestled...but we really grew up together and we started doing adult movies at the same time. But at the beginning of the relationship, there was true...lover...tendencies.
Q: I hear you're up to some exciting things at Digital Playground, is there anything you'd like to tell us about?
Janine: Yes, I just recently signed with Digital Playground and they're going to be starting up a brand new website...www.janineland.com. And we're up to some other things. We haven't decided yet. But some new, exciting things--things that I haven't done before.
Q: When you hang up your heels for good, will you stay in this industry? Do you anticipate producing or directing?
Janine: I don't know. I doubt it. I just see myself going off in a different direction. But I'll still be a big fan of it. I'll be watching!
