Back in the late eighties and early nineties, VCA Pictures produced some of the finest, shot-on-video features for an audience which had not yet been overwhelmed by a never-ending onslaught of gonzo fuck flicks. Directors like John Leslie (Chameleon, The Tease), Gregory Dark (New Wave Hookers, The Creasemaster and even Bud Lee (Centerfold) delivered fiery sex scenes as well as dialogue and character-driven drama worthy of your hard-earned dollars. Nowadays, however, porno features are a rarity. Only the truly elite studios like Digital Playground, Wicked, Vivid, and of course, VCA are releasing XXX-rated, story-based titles with any kind of regularity. The other studios (and there are of course, many exceptions) seem content on giving us more of the same endless sex scenes without plot or purpose.
And now, VCA has released the punk-sounding BARBED WIRE KISS, a "pornogbiography" of up and coming director Benny Profane. This is a title which I thought I would like instantly, but was proven wrong. The pretentious sounding title is not helped by the bland box cover, which focuses on skinny, tiny-topped Amber Rayne appears against a cheaply composed red background with the title letters surrounding her. The back cover offers a few snapshots of the sex scenes, but on the basis of this design alone, there would be no reason for the discriminating porn collector to pick this DVD up.
As it turns out, my first impression of the video also happens to reflect my feelings towards the movie itself, which is a vignette-oriented autobiography of the director himself told with a Tarot card reader, played by Caroline Pierce. As a result, each sex scene has its own self-contained story or meaning involving Mr. Profane's rather dramatic life. Flashback-oriented vignettes are pretty common in most features, though I feel it's a lazier form of storytelling. And while I'm impressed with the director's willingness to lay bare his personal experiences, the hardcore itself doesn't really move me at all. First off all, the performers as well as the sexual situations are a bit too "alternative" for me: For instance, the first scene involves a car-fuck with his first wife, played by Veronica Jett. The action is sometimes difficult to see, with body parts being obscured by their surroundings and too many close-ups of genitalia banging into each other. Miss Jett has a skanky, rock and roll look which I find unappealing, and her partner Zak Sabbath is even more unwatchable. Now I understand that the look and style must be deliberate choices made by Mr. Profane, but it's not my type of porn.
Nevertheless, the narrative holds your attention, if only for the awkward yet unfortunate dramatic incidents which are portrayed (divorce, death of an infant, a bout with drugs and alcohol). As the film continues, we see the director himself sucking and fucking Miss Pierce, while a voice-over advances the tale. Other sex scenes then follow including Sabbath getting it on with Cyndi Blackwood, an interracial anal session involving bleached blonde Adriana Nicole and Tee Reel, then concluding with an affair between Marcos Leon (playing Benny in later years) and Amber Rayne, who actually looks better in the movie than on the DVD packaging. I must admit that Mr. Profane has a distinct style, reminiscent of Gregory Dark's post-VCA work, and it's refreshing to see porn scenes which don't just imitate the gonzo approach. Along with the brightly lit images, other creative elements such as captions, text and other graphics are sprinkled throughout the narrative and the eccentric music works quite well with the sex scenes. However, times where the actors' skin seems to radiate with a burning white glow, and the less than flattering camera angles are a complete turn-off as well as an annoying distraction. As a result, even the most enjoyable sex scenes (such as the Marcos/Amber pairing) are diminished due to the technical "problems."
Bonuses include a "Sex only alternate version" of the movie, which edits out everything but the all-important bump and grind scenes. It's a good choice to pick if you find these types of features too long and overdone for porn. The Behind The Scenes featurette (directed by one "Cat Pee") runs for over one hour (compared to the actual movie which is only half hour or so longer), and incorporates a photo shoot of Amber Rayne, some impromptu interviews as well as the usual rambling footage of the production. Your interest in these scenes will be dependent on your appreciation of the main feature. As for me, I doubt I would ever give this disc a repeat viewing.

Benny Profane stars and directs VCA's
Barbed Wire Kiss. This story may get a little confusing, but I will try my best to explain and not leave out any x-rated details. Benny is played by several different people including Zak Sabbath, Marcos Leon, and Tee Reel, as he tells parts of his erotic past to a Tarot card reader. Profane does the narrating, but he also gets some action while he talks.
Caroline Pierce, a Tarot card reader, is patiently waiting for her male client (Benny Profane) to show up. When he arrives, Caroline lays out four cards for him. Each card has a different meaning. Pierce begins to explain the meanings of each card, but is interrupted when Profane takes out her large boobs and starts fondling them from behind. He then proceeds to tell the stories of the cards himself.
The first story is about his first wife (Veronica Jett). Zak Sabbath plays Benny, and he is fooling around in his car with Jett. Veronica gives Zak a blowjob in the front seat of the car, and then they move the action to the hood. They have missionary, cowgirl, and doggy style sex. Two things that I noticed, and that I liked about this scene, was how clean shaven they were, and the great camera angles. Sometimes when there's hairiness or bumps it can be distracting to watch. The camera angles from behind were extremely hot, and the shots from the dashboard were exciting. Sabbath ends this session by cumming on her ass.
Benny goes on to tell Caroline about how things between him and his wife went sour. He got Veronica knocked-up, but two weeks after the baby was born, it died. Not long after that, his mother passed away. Trying to cope with everything that's going on in his life, Profane starts shooting heroine, and that's when his wife leaves him.
Sabbath plays profane again in the next scene. This time, Benny falls for another punk-ish chick (Cyndi Blackwood), but deep down, she's a real "daddy's girl". The couple is at her parent's house, and it's easy to tell this because the furniture is covered in plastic and from 4 decades ago. Sabbath gets his woman naked and fondles her before eating her from behind. He gets a blowjob on the plastic, and then lets Cyndi ride his stiff cock. After a lot of hard banging and anal sex, Zak blows his load on Cyndi's ass.
Rebecca the Pirate (Adrianna Nicole) is next on Benny's trip down memory lane. He remembers that she was more into girls, but would take cock anytime she could get it. She's on the bed naked and she is getting ready for a solo sex session with herself when Tee Reel walks in on her. He's so surprised to see the voluptuous and nude Adrianna that he drops his tray and stares in amazement. Adrianna invites Tee Reel into bed with her and starts deep throating his cock. Benny and Rebecca the Pirate didn't last long though. She didn't like the fact that he was in porn, and he wasn't about to give it up. The two met on the set of a porno they were starring in, and Marcos found her more appealing than any other girl he has fucked before. He eats Amber's pussy and receives a blowjob from her. She rides him cowgirl style on the bed before getting fucked in the missionary position. You'll also get to see doggy style and some toe licking before Marcos finishes in her mouth.
You can find a few outtakes at the end of the DVD. As for Special Features, the best one has got to be the Sex Only Alternate Version. This version starts with Zak and Veronica in the car, and has non-stop fucking from that point on. The Star Index is where you can choose your favorite girl, and how you like to see her get fucked. There is a very long Behind The Scenes featurette, a Slide Show, and Trailers.
You'll especially like this DVD if you're into the punk type or alt girls. They really take a hard pounding from their men in each scene. I also enjoyed having the option of watching just the sex without having to fast-forward. More pornos should come with this feature.
