The "Dirty Debutantes" series has been a major influence on the porn scene since the early Nineties. The idea is to show the audience something more "reality based" than the average porn. Also in the early Nineties, video cameras became very cheap, and people who use to buy porn, were starting to make their own tapes of themselves and their friends--and selling them at the local video stores.

With the advent of the pro/am genre, the porn industry could continuously recruit for new female talent, keep costs down, and co-op the amateur videos that were out-selling the "pros" in the market.

"Dirty Debutantes #1" is the first of over 100 volumes of the Powers/Gilles series. The main standout is Mia Powers (no relations to Ed), who was a nude dancer at the time she appeared in this video; and was looking to cross over into hardcore porn. Of the women in this video she is the most willing to participate--in fact, she comes back again near the end of the production for a scene with Ed Powers. Yep, she really wants to be in pictures!

The best of the rest is the scene of an un-identified couple, who are having sex on camera for the first time. This is truly amatuer; but it does have a certain chemistry between the pair. There is also a "tease" with a girl Tracy (the best looking woman in the production) who does not have sex with Ed Powers, but just teases him--and the audience. She does let him eat her, and she licks his balls; but, like your high school girlfriend, she won't fuck him.

This is very cheap porno--and, you get what you pay for. The primary interest of this DVD is its place in the development of a less professional type of porn that came into vogue during the last decade.

Extras: There are no extras.

Video: Very awkward--but, this may be intentional in keeping with the amateur feel of this production.

Audio: The sound may have been dubbed in after the production, but this is not distracting.

Every legend has a beginning, as proven by the DVD release of the first two volumes from Ed Powers' astonishingly successful Dirty Debutantes series. Back in the day it was presented by "The Nasty Brothers," and Ed was partnered with industry veteran Jamie Gillis. Both discs look pretty dismal, with the marginal source video (shot with camcorders over a decade ago) getting no help whatsoever from a poor digital transfer. As a result, each disc is loaded with mild - but constant - moire and pixelation.

As for the blurbs on the back of each case, the "lots of chapter stops" and "dirty picture gallery" claims are true. However, the line reading "Interactive- pick your debutante, choose what she does!" is meaningless, and seems to be a misleading description of the chapter menus.
