At a time when the adult industry should be trying to do more with the DVD format, studios seem complacent to give customers the same-old/same-old when it comes to interactive sex. About a week ago, I came away mildly disappointed with another studio's latest interactive title and now here's Digital Sin's
My Plaything: Brea Bennett, which seems to be doing everything it can to make sure customers
won't buy future editions of the series. It's not that it's a horrible release...it's just that it takes no steps forward (and perhaps even a few steps back) in trying to grow consumer interest in interactive sex on DVD.
Starring bubbly blonde Brea Bennett, and using a race car theme that is sure to appeal to all those NASCAR fans out there, one of the first of several disappointments I noted when starting up this DVD is that Digital Sin presents the footage letterboxed, but not anamorphic. I would almost let that fact slide (previous volumes haven't been anamoprhic, either), except for the fact that the three striptease scenes in the bonus features
are anamorphic...which only reminds the viewer of how good the actual interactive part of the disc could have looked.
Even though we get a non-anamorphic title, at least the video quality itself is sharp and free of any glitches. The same can't be said about the audio, which was all over the place, depending on the option one chooses. Some positions have the audio clear, while in others is sounds more muddled. I didn't notice any drop-offs or synching problems during my viewing, but the fact that the audio isn't consistent between one position and the other was, at the least, mildly annoying. The audio track is presented in 2.0 Dolby.
Getting past issues with the video and audio, you're probably asking yourself...well, porn boy, how was the sex? Well, it's also a mixed bag. Like previous
My Plaything releases, there's a nice variety here of teasing (tits, ass, pussy and full body), masturbation (fingers, dildo or vibrator), foreplay (tongue, fingers, vibrator, dildo, and blowjob) and sex (missionary, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, and doggy), with multiple angles available for all those options
except the full body striptease. While all these positions are well-shot, and at least one of the two angles is a good approximation of what "you" would see if you were actually screwing Brea, there is a major problem here - and it's faked cumshots.
The only real cumshot on the entire disc takes place in the "Nice" (each position has Nice/Naughty mood options for Brea) option of the blowjob selection...and even it's a pop that mainly goes back down onto the guy's own cock and body. The "Naughty" blowjob pop has the guy "cumming" in Brea's mouth (of course, we never see a drop of jizz), while all other cumshots in the movie are computer-generated and look so fake that they are almost laughable. At lease when those "other" studios fake pops they use an actual real-life liquid substitute.
In terms of bonus material, in addition to the three anamorphic striptease scenes I already mentioned (each a couple minutes in length), the disc includes a 3 ½-minute "Behind The Scenes" featurette (which is actually bloopers and outtakes); a 13 ½-minute bonus lesbian scene with action between Brea and Ashlyn Brooke (which is actually the best action on the entire DVD, in my opinion); and a photo gallery.
It's hard to recommend a pass on
My Plaything: Brea Bennett, since I've become a big fan of this series over the years. However, until Digital Sin gets their act together and starts matching the kind of interactive experiences that studios like Zero Tolerance and Vivid have been offering up in recent years, I'm going to be wary about any future volumes of
My Plaything.
