Vivid's Miles From Needles reminds me of hundreds of porn features from the 1990s, where stories got underway with interesting premises, but seemed to give up at the mid-way point of the movie. I really liked the set-up here, but quickly realized that director B. Skow (who is also credited as the writer) really had no intention of doing anything with the characters.

That's a shame, because Savanna Samson can be one of the better actresses in the business. Just look at her work in The New Devil In Miss Jones if you don't believe me. Here she plays a young married woman who is having a lesbian affair with brunette April Blossom. When hubby Steven St. Croix catches the two of them together, he flips out, and after a sexual session with Savanna where he forces April to watch (although she occasional joins in the blowjob action), April stabs him from behind - killing him instantly.

April convinces Savanna that they both have to go on the run (even though she's obviously really the only guilty one) and the two gals head off cross country, only to find themselves pulled over, arrested and cuffed to the wall by a small town sheriff (played by Evan Stone).

But it turns out that Evan isn't a sheriff at all (the movie never explains where he came across the car, the uniform and the equipment), but rather a sadistic kidnapper who lives with a kept "redneck" woman (Kimberly Kane) and an equally low-brow brother (James Deen). I was never sure, by the way, if James' character was Kimberly's brother, Evan's brother, or perhaps neither of the above...not that it's important to the plot.

The rest of the movie is spent with Savanna and April holed up in Evan's house and forced to either watch (as in an Evan/Kimberly coupling) or participate in (as in a threesome between Savanna, April and James) sexual debauchery for Evan's twisted entertainment. The girls eventually escape, only to have to hide in a nearby building where they watch a threesome between Evan, Brian Surewood and Maria Belluci.

Miles From Needles eventually comes to it's rather violent ending, with really only one of these characters making it out alive. There's a voice-over of a police report right before the end credits that actually conflicts with something we've just seen on screen...so I'm not even sure of the fate of one of the characters.

The good news for those just looking for some quality sex is that the action is pretty good, and - unlike most adult features- each sex scene is quite lengthy. Although there's only six sex scenes in the movie, the total running time is over three hours, which indicates just how much time is devote to each tryst.

Perhaps because of the movie's length, the bonus material only contains three additional scenes from other Vivid releases, rather than the typical five. All three of the scenes feature Savanna Samson, so if you're a fan, this may be a DVD you'll want to consider adding to your collection. Other bonuses include a 20-minute behind the scenes featurette; a slide show, and four trailers for other Vivid releases.

Because the first half of the movie is pretty interesting, and most of the sex is quite good, I'm still giving Miles From Needles a slight recommendation. If you're the kind of viewer who really searches for a good story and not just good sex, however, you might want to rent before purchasing - but if you're just into seeing Savanna have sex, you should be fine with Miles From Needles. Just have the remote handy to fast-forward through the blood, bad acting and poorly-put-together plot.

This is not your typical adult movie. It certainly isn't your typical Vivid movie. It is a dark vision written and directed by B Skow. He generally takes on lighter subjects than murder, kidnapping and twisted high desert families. Savanna Samson stars as a woman caught in a bad marriage, torn apart by a forbidden love and in danger on the open road. She is very good here. Sexually she carries the action well both guys and girls. Kimberly Kane also pops up in a couple of sex scenes and handles her dialog really well. The male leads, Evan Stone and Steven St. Croix are creepy as hell. Both give award-caliber performances in this tight drama that is actually a bit suspenseful. Sexually the action is different from other Vivid projects. It is darker yes and more intense. It is also much more gonzo than usual. From an intensity standpoint and even from something as simple as the length of the scenes. They are longer and that is a good thing for most of us. On the other hand, when they get too long they actually take away form the momentum built up by the script. (How often is that a concern?) I liked this movie a lot. Savanna is great to watch, very sexy and once again proves she's a star. The story is tense and mostly well acted. The scenes are a little long, but hotter than I would have expected. So if you are looking for a movie with a little bite to it, give this one a try.

Savanna Samson & April Blossom

This loving couple has to keep things quiet, but that just turns them both on. In bed, Savanna certainly knows how to turn her lover on.
