I've been an Andrew Blake fan ever since the esteemed director burst onto the hardcore scene with his classic NIGHT TRIPS, starring Tori Welles. For over twenty years, he has produced some of the best looking and most memorable pieces of erotica for pornophiles with more discriminating tastes. Naturally, his stuff isn't for everyone. Early titles released under his Studio A company - such as PIN-UPS, THE VILLA, ARIA and so forth - were met with mixed reaction even among his most ardent fans, though his production values were never questioned.
It should be of little surprise, therefore, to state that VOYEUR WITHIN will be greeted with the same kind of mixed reaction typical of most Studio A films. The movie runs a little over eighty minutes long (including credits!) and features only three distinctive boy-girl scenes: Sadie West gets a quick screw by Kris Slater, then Jade Hsu sucks and fucks Johnny Castle while Michelle Maylene observes, and finally the terrifically tantalizing Tori Black finishes the film with Mr. Mountain. The remainder of the film is composed of extensive graphic tease shots, with some girl-girl play sprinkled throughout. Without a linear storyline, this movie will definitely leaves some viewers cold, and probably infuriated over the lack of any unifying narrative. However, once you accept the fact that VOYEUR WITHIN is an artistic exercise in striking imagery (high contrast black and white, jumpy editing, grainy colors) and sexual novelty (for example, shortly after getting a cumshot to the chest, Sadie West spends the next few minutes rubbing white liquid all over her body, and then we abruptly move on to another scene), it's easier to take the movie with a grain of salt.
I recognize that sex scenes which are presented with slow-motion special effects, meticulously controlled camera work, tight editing, and an atonal music score may not produce the same kind of reaction among raincoaters that a Sam No-directed anal scene featuring Jenna Haze might have, but audiences should appreciate the creativity delivered by Mr. Blake. Like his pop music counterpart, Prince, not everything this creative genius does is necessarily successful, or even likable, but there's no denying the fascination and attnetion his work generates.
Of course, as a committed fan of the one and only Tori Black, my reception to this VOYEUR WITHIN is hardly impartial. Blake apparently finds her equally alluring, and allows his camera to pore all over her perfect figure while she primps and poses away. (Interestingly, the video even captures his own reflection - complete with camera and boom mic - in a mirror set behind her, which I suppose is consistent with the "voyeur" title). It's also a wet dream come true to see Tori in a scene with Aria Giovanni whose looks are almost as striking. But it is a disappointment to discover that other than some aggressive fondling, foot fetishes, and playing around with her pubic hair, the hardcore conduct is kept to a frustrating minimum. That Bobbi Starr is also a part of their group is an added plus.
Other than a few extended trailers, there are no bonus features to speak of. It's clear that Studio A doesn't concern itself with catering to general adult audiences, nor conforming to the conventions of the DVD marketplace. So viewers who have been weaned on gonzo titles should be forewarned regarding about the "culture shock" to be experienced from VOYEUR WITHIN. As for me...Well, as a longtime admirer of Mr. Blake and overzealous fan of Tori Black, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this flick. Joining them together in one video is my equivalent of mixing chocolate and peanut butter. Metaphorically speaking, however, those with certain nut allergies will definitely want to avoid such a product.
