WKRP IN CINCINNATI: A XXX PARODY is yet another adult satire of an old television show, made to appeal to the great unwashed masses who have a nostalgic regard for this type of popular culture. Actually, WKRP was one of the better comedies on television during the late seventies and early eighties, and Director Lee Roy Myers does a fine job with providing arousing hardcore within the context of the rather witty series (which only ran for four seasons, not including the syndicated version where many characters changed).
The emphasis here is more on mimicking the look and feel of sitcom than in advancing a storyline. Familiar characters appear, exchange lines of dialogue consistent with their personas, then have sex with someone nearby. Some vague plot is referenced (in this case, missing promotional concert tickets send the station into a tailspin), but there are no twists or complexities to speak of. With these types of satires, the best thing to do is to admire the production and enjoy the sex.
I was expecting a catchy opening theme song, but what we get is some generic rock instrumental. (Shades of the mainstream DVD releases, in which certain songs were replaced because of copyright issues.) I don't expect New Sensations to license Rolling Stones tunes (that cost alone would probably exceed the entire budget for an entire series of adult features), but a few more background music made for porn would have been nice. For instance, it might have been a kick to play the DEEP THROAT song ("Don't row a boat, that's all she wrote, Deep Throat") or the NEW WAVE HOOKERS theme ("She Electrified Me") just as an inside joke for old time fans like myself. Stick around for the end credits, however, for a variation on the original show's closing song.
Ryan McLane plays Andy Travis, but looks more like Andy Dick. Nevertheless, he's lucky enough to get Kagney Lynn Karter for the opening scene, which takes place after some expository dialogue regarding the station and its cast of characters. Seeing McClane with his hairpiece, checkered shirt, and oversized belt buckle on the same bed with the curvy and busty Miss Karter clad in red lingerie is quite an incongruous sight, but the visuals get better once she swallows him up and bounces on top of him.
Following their quickie, we arrive at the station for some fairly witty banter among the familiar staff of WKRP. African-American swordsman Tee Reel plays Venus Flytrap, a deejay who is introduced spinning a record (for those unfamiliar with these large pieces of vinyl, a record is an ancient artifact formerly used to reproduce music before the advent of digital) and then turning his attention to leggy Andy San Dimas for a little station break. Their interracial affair is one of the better sex scenes in this film, and includes some rough doggy-style screwing with hair-pulling, and a money shot to her tongue which is enthusiastically swallowed up.
Ashlynn Brooke plays the role of Jennifer Marlowe, and shares a respectable scene with Ralph Long as Herb Tarlek. Our Miss Brooke isn't as breathy or as naturally playful as Loni Anderson, but there's no mistaken as to her character. The wig is a bit too obvious, but fitting for the role. I was expecting a bit more fun and fanciness between the two, since Jennifer's obvious assets are what most casual viewers remember most about the show. But because each main character has only a single sex scene, there's bound to be some disappointment among ardent fans who were expecting a bit more hardcore from this type of parody. I guess they'll just have to wait for the part two.
Faye Reagan and Jackie Daniels serve as fans of Johnny Fever, played by Evan Stone. Though he tends to overact at times, Mr. Stone captures the Howard Hesseman character in broad strokes so the wit and humor are loud and clear. Needless to say, once Faye Reagan gets down to business, concerns about accuracy in characterization simply disappear. She devours him hungrily, almost to the point where we forget that Miss Daniels is a fellow participant. This threesome features some a terrific dual blowjob and hard fucking where both girls remain energetic and active even when it's not their turn to get banged. Jackie gets a streak of splooge on her forehead, but there's enough to go around so that Faye gets a taste. My only nitpicking complaint on this scene would be the lack of cumswapping, which surely would have put the whole thing over the top.
Scott Lyons plays Les Nessman, but resembles like Lewis Skolnick from REVENGE OF THE NERDS. He also looks much younger than the original character, yet portrays Les's mixture of arrogance and ignorance very well. He spends a lot of onscreen time with Holly Hearts, a newbie of adult in her late twenties, who does an excellent job as Bailey Quarters. The glasses, outfit and hair are nearly perfect (big kudos to the costume designer!), and her mannerisms are astoundingly well-studied, from the way she fidgets while talking, and even how she holds a pencil. That she gets it on with the Les Nessman character is both a shock and a disappointment. Jan Smithers deserves better, but any outrage I had disappeared once Miss Heart put her mouth to work. Besides the excellent cocksucking, the fucking action is also quite arousing, particularly Scott screws her doggy-style on a desk. Of course, the oral cumshot to her is a satisfying way to end their scene, as well as the movie.
As expected, the bonus features for this satire are plentiful and enjoyable. A Blooper reel running nearly ten minutes long and a nearly fifty minutes Behind The Scenes segment should satisfy any fan of this video and of the series itself. A sex scene between redheaded MILF Janet Mason and Rod Fontana originally edited from the main feature is also available for viewing, along with a "Party" version of the movie which edits the hardcore and removes the money shots.
Over the past couple of years I've grown mighty tired of adult features based on old TV shows. It's a cliche which seems to insist on beating itself to the ground. However, this title has a lot going for it, and I'm rather surprised it hasn't gotten more attention from critics and audiences. It's one of the few porn parodies where I would gladly welcome a sequel.
