I took one look at the front and back packaging for THE SUBSTITUTE, and was convinced that I would love this movie almost unconditionally. Of course, no one should ever judge a porn video by its cover, but Raven Alexis looks just too hot and too seductive for me to second guess the erotic content of this by Robby D feature video.

As it turns out, I ended up more in lust than in love with this title. Though a little melodramatic, shamelessly cliched and predictable, THE SUBSTITUTE takes your typical student-teacher "private lessons" storyline and delivers all the erotic action one might reasonably expect. In fact, the movie is so straightforward in its approach, that all of the main character's personality and motivation are told to the viewer within the first fifteen minutes (Ben English interviews Raven about her teaching style, and she admits that she's prone to fucking most of her students). With a running time of 98 minutes, it's clear that the director wanted to dispense with the dramatics and character building as early as possible so that we may enjoy all the action. Moreover, Raven's supremely good looks easily make up for some terribly stilted line deliveries. For anyone who has seen Robby D.'s excellent TEACHERS, the classroom setting and overall production design should be more than a bit familiar, though the scale of this feature is certainly reduced.

Raven plays a substitute teacher for a group of foreign students, played by performers who indeed are European-born (Madison Parker, Cindy Hope and Jessica Moore are Hungarian, and every porn fan is familiar with Manuel Ferrara's thick French accent and Mick Blue's Austrian tones). Like another Digital Playground playmate (namely Kayden Kross, who shines in THE SMITHS and MY BOSS' DAUGHTER), Miss Alexis isn't nearly as wild nor as carnal as one might hope. She seems to be adverse to any sort of French kissing, despite Mr. Blue's best efforts to penetrate her mouth, and her oral skills are not quite at Jenna Haze's level (then again, whose is?). Her two straight scenes with Mick and later with Mr. Ferrari aren't meant for roncador consumption. I suppose that as their teacher, there's supposed to be a kinder and gentler approach to her affairs, but it's also clear it's the guys who are in charge of their rather reserved partner. (Some rather hasty research on my part reveals that Raven Alexis's appearance THE SUBSTITUTE predates her turn in JACK'S POV #16, which earned a rave from me for her smoldering, cum-swallowing affair with Mick Blue (which also took place in a classroom!) It's possible that her level of "good, but not great" performance here isn't a true indication of her abilities, given what we see in her other video. Only time will tell.)

A classroom scene involving MILF math teacher Diamond Foxxx with Christian Devil delivers a solid but routine scene of fucking and sucking. There's no doubt that Diamond is a more open in front of the camera (literally and figuratively speaking), but the eye-candy isn't the same. However, Jessica Moore does much better work in a locker room scene with Tommy Gunn, which emphasizes some fine deepthroating and enthusiastic schtupping, but marred only slightly by the lack of a facial.

I was hoping for another scene with Miss Alexis as part of the finale (don't the girls deserve some of her personal tutoring time as well?). Instead, THE SUBSTITUTE concludes with a threesome in which Cindy Hope and Madison Parker turn their attention to Principal English. The number of female participants alone make it an easy win for best scene of the movie, but the dual action blowjobs, brief lesbian play, and shared cumshot are what make it all memorable. It certainly isn't the finest menage a trois I've ever witnessed, but it's a big saving grace to an erotic experience which would otherwise end up with an average rating.

As with all Digital Playground discs to date, this Blu-ray title looks and sounds great. Mind you, it's not home theatre demonstration material, but few productions in porn have the consistency and quality of a release like THE SUBSTITUTE. The Behind The Scenes feature is fun to watch as a supplement to the main feature, but as I've stated in other reviews, a few more feature-related bonuses (extended footage, interviews, photoshoots and so forth) would go a long way.

THE SUBSTITUTE isn't an erotic substitute for some of Robby D's better feature (such as TEACHERS, FLY GIRLS, or even NURSES), but it's sure to please anyone who wants to experience as much of Miss Alexis as they can.
