Even before winning 3 AVN awards,

Stuntgirl is a difficult disc to rate on technical merits since parts of it are supposed to look crappy. The title is quite dark causing a fair amount of grain in the picture. While the grain caused by underexposed videography is somewhat acceptable, the heavy pixelation of the DVD transfer is a bit more troubling. But once again, it's hard to tell what look the director was going for. Whatever the intent, the end result is anything but clear and crisp. With the exception of the first and last scenes, music or other bizarre sounds are almost always playing in the background, adding to the unusual experience. All of this is expertly edited and presented in a decent stereo mix.
For such a hyped release, Hustler really dropped the ball on the extras offering little substantial supplemental content other than the bonus scenes. A "making of" featurette or even a cast list would have been a nice addition. Still, the 30 minutes of bonus scenes add a bit more value to the full feature which runs a mere 1 hour and 7 minutes. The first bonus scene is extra girl/girl stuff with Jessica Jaymes and Kimberly Kane. It's a bit softer than their strap-on sequence, but it's still fun to watch. Next is a classy little solo softcore sequence with Jessica, shot like a strip-tease loop from the 50s or 60s; the music and setting are just perfect! Then we're treated to more footage from the sex club scene. This is shot entirely in black and white and focuses on a couple, complete with blowjob, penetration, and a facial pop. Elizabeth Michelle returns for the last two sequences, providing some nice solo action. In the last sequence she's dressed kind of like a pirate and fucks herself with a dildo suctioned to a wall...it's good stuff!
To laud
Stuntgirl as a work of unparalleled genius is an exercise in hyperbole. But it's also unfair to completely dismiss it as pretentious or "too arty." Admittedly the appeal of the movie is extremely narrow, but those looking for something different will be rewarded with a cleverly crafted piece of smut. Instead of fixating on the glamour of fancy costumes and lavish palatial settings, the movie is more interested in the gritty details of what happens in hourly rate motel rooms and exclusive sex clubs. The camera work, editing, and sound track flawlessly compliment this dark obsession, creating a surreal and erotic ambience which permeates the production from start to finish. That being said, the casual porn viewer probably won't find much here to appreciate. The motel encounter between Manuel and Venus is the most traditional porno scene, offering all the nastiness one would expect from a gonzo title. But the rest of the scenes will probably leave many wishing for much more hardcore action. So before settling on
Stuntgirl ask yourself what you want out of porn. If you simply want the most fuck for your buck, grab a gonzo title or a compilation. If you need a story, grab the latest feature from Wicked or Vivid. Otherwise, give
