Barbara Dare grew up in Wayne, New Jersey, and was always something of a wild child. Prior to making her adult film debut, Dare was known for her uninhibited, anything goes lifestyle at the legendary New York City swinger's club, Plato's Retreat. So well known was she that she was named Ms. Plato's in 1985. Later that same year, Dare made her porn debut and turned her voracious appetite for sex into a lucrative career. She became one of the first porn actresses to sign an exclusive contract with a production company after she signed a $100,000 contract deal with Essex Video. She was also a contract performer for Vivid Entertainment.
Over the course of her career, Dare performed in about 170 films, working for various studios such as Vivid, Lipstik Video, Pleasure Productions, Western Visuals, and many more. She was known for her over-the-top performances in various niches, such as hardcore boy/girl, bisexual, interracial, lesbian content, solo masturbation, and much more. In The Naked Stranger she turns in an award-winning sexual performance with Tom Byron that will go down in porn history books. Other notable performances include Aerobisex Girls 2 (Lipstik Video), Barbara Dare: Dirtiest Of Dare (Vivid), Deep Throat Girls (Essex Video / Electric Hollywood), For Your Lips Only (CDI Home Video), and Slippery When Wet (Pleasure Productions).
Beside her successful film career, Dare also modeled for various adult magazines, including Hustler, Swank, Fox, and High Society. She has also toured both the US and Canada as a professional stripper. In 1989, Dare joined fellow porn star Stephanie Swift to co-author a monthly article for Swank. She took a brief hiatus from porn in the early 90s, after which she briefly worked for Essex Video in public relations. Dare retired from the industry 1994, but continued to have her scenes released in compilations for many years following her retirement. Then, in 1995, Dare regained some attention through her performance in Barbara Dare's Surf, Sand and Sex where she performs a hardcore scene with Brian "Kato" Kaelin, the houseboy of O.J. Simpson, in his only hardcore performance.
In addition to her adult film career, Dare made a number of mainstream appearances over the years. in 1987, Dare was interviewed for the episode of the TV news series Frontline regarding the death of fellow porn star Shauna Grant. She also had roles in mainstream productions such as the film 52 Pick-Up in 1986, and the comedy/horror movie Evil Toons in 1992.
