Interview with Asia Carrera - January 9, 2002
Adult Entertainment Expo 2001 in Las Vegas NV
PornstarEmpire: Let me ask you right now: how are you doing?
Asia Carrera: [pauses, sighs, and laughs] I'm tuckered!
Q: You've been here all day today, and yesterday, too...
Asia Carrera: Yeah, two more days to go [sighs, smiles]. It's quite a shock to the system from being a solo computer geek at home to coming to this mob where people are screaming my name!
Q: You don't attend many conventions or events, do you?
Asia Carrera: No, just this one.
Q: At Adult DVD Empire, for this week [the second week of January 2002], we've running articles on you and your best DVDs [Diesel's Den ]. You have a lot of fans on Pornstar Empire. So we're here to ask you what you're currently doing, about your latest projects, and what you want to emphasize right now...
Asia Carrera: Check out my website: asiacarrera.com. That's always first and foremost. That's my thing because that's where I get to be 100% me. It's not diluted by some director's artistic vision, it's just me! And as for projects, I've got the Naked Hollywood series that I'm doing; it's what I'm promoting here on the show. We've got the Sex In The City series; we've done about twelve or thirteen [editions] now, and we've got signed for another year, so we'll be doing another twelve episodes.
Q: Are you going to direct again, like you did with Appassionata?
Asia Carrera: Appassionata is the last time I want to do that much work on a movie! That burned me out so bad -- I haven't played a piano since! All that took it out of me!
Q: You wrote and directed that with your husband, Bud Lee...
Asia Carrera: As a matter of fact, that is the movie where we separated, it was that much stress [laughs]! He didn't even want to sit through the edit! It's like, "I don't want to look at Asia anymore!"
Q: Have you seen it since?.
Asia Carrera: Yeah, I had to because I authored the DVD. I spent three months, doing nine-to-five authoring the DVD. I was one of the three-man team doing that. I hid an easter egg in there, so look for that! And it's up for a bunch of nominations this year: Best DVD, Best DVD Menu and I'm excited about that. So I'm being nominated for being a geek.
Q: You talked about your website, and first of all, fans know that you do everything on it. And you're very candid about everything. You write about your life story, you have tons of pictures...it's very entertaining, but it's also very open and honest. Is running it something that's cathartic...
Asia Carrera: It's very therapeutic, to go on the Bulletins page and bitch about the CES show [laughs] and let them know how I feel about it, that it's really hard on me. That's very therapeutic for me because the fans will come up to me at the show and they'll say, "thanks for being here, we really appreciate it and we know it's hard on you" and stuff. And they're really sympathetic to me being here. It makes it really nice, it feels like I'm more surrounded by friends and family than a bunch of strangers. So that's nice. But, the real reason I started being so honest and open on my site was to get a jump start on the gossip sites; so that they would have no gossip to dig up on me, because I don't like being gossiped about. That really hurts. So I figure if I scoop everything Asia, they have no scoops to find!" So that's why I did it!
Q: And for those who don't know, you do talk about your family life; you talk about your brothers and sisters and how close you are to them. Is this something you're going to continue doing, even when your retire from adult? Because you actually talk about that sooner, or later, you may retire...
Asia Carrera: [laughs] It's not written in stone when I'm going to retire. I don't know, I've always said [I'd retire] by thirty, but now it's getting closer. It's "tick-tick" ticking and...I'm still happy here! So it's making me sad to think about leaving. And with every passing month, and every birthday, I'm feeling a little more, "Oh, no! Time's getting closer!" I don't know. We'll have to see, take a "wait and see" approach. I've got a year and a half. I'm 28 and a half now, so...
Q: You just said a few minutes ago that you haven't played piano in awhile...
Asia Carrera: It's just been stress. I look at the piano and I think of Appassionata, because I had to play live in front of all the reporters and all the press, and they were all waiting to see if I were for real or not. And it was just so much pressure on me. I was, like, in tears before I went out there and all the reporters were waiting and I was shaking. I said, "I think I'm going to throw up! I'm going to throw up!" And they're like, "No, come on, Asia!" And I'm like, "No, I'm gonna puke!" [laughs]
Q: That was harder than when you played Carnegie Hall? [As a child, Asia played piano competitively and gave performances in Carnegie Hall]
Asia Carrera: When I was younger, it didn't really matter to me. When you're younger, you're too stupid to care! So you can do your school play without being nervous and stuff, but when you get older, you care.
Q: I know you like video games, too...
Asia Carrera: Yes, I'm an Unreal Tournament addict! I'm really big on that. And I was ranked number one -- I made my own bots for it. I've got my own site: megabitchgoddess.com, where I have all my unreal botskins that I've made. They're all Asia-skins that are topless. So when I'm fragging on-line, the guys will run up to me and say, "Oh my god, she's topless!" They stop, they stare...I kill 'em! [laughs] So I guess it's cheating a bit...
Q: By the way, and I know you've heard this a hundred times, but you look absolutely gorgeous in person, even more than on video...
Asia Carrera: [looks away shyly]
Q: Is it tiring to keep seeing fans, and answering the same questions, signing autographs, even outside of the AVN convention? Is meeting these fans hard to do?
Asia Carrera: No, it's not hard. It does get a bit monotonous, the repetitiousness of it. But I keep reminding myself that these are fans who may never have a chance to meet me again. They have thirty seconds to sixty seconds to make their impression of me. If I give them a half-assed, distracted attention span, it's gonna reflect on me poorly! So I try my hardest to be nice to every fan, give them my full attention for the time that we're talking and to be nice because that may be the only time they ever get to meet me and I can appreciate that fact!
Q: Is there anything you'd like to tell your fans? You know, like any kind of etiquette we should practice if we see Asia out in public?
Asia Carrera: I don't mind meeting my fans anywhere. I'm really cool [with it]. If you see me at the grocery store, which has happened, that's cool. Umm...don't bother me when I'm gambling! I'm so superstitious, and I really hate when people stand and watch five feet away over my shoulder without saying a word for like half an hour. That drives me bonkers, so don't do that! [laughs]
Q: Are you going to stay with Adam & Eve for the near future, or do you have projects coming from elsewhere?
Asia Carrera: I'm not under contract with anybody. I haven't since Vivid, and that was only one year at the very beginning of my career. And I decided I could hopefully do more on my own, because as a Vivid Girl, you only do eight pictures a year. So I came out on my own and released A Is For Asia, which went out the door as number one and it's still my best seller to this day...
Q: You had a couple of anal scenes in that....
Asia Carrera: Exactly! [laughs] And you're not going to find twin anals anywhere else!
Q: And you were really good in Cumback Pussy #6, working with Tom Byron...
Asia Carrera: That was [anal scene] number two. There was three of them, the third one is in Randy West's Raw Sex [#5]
Q: You know what, I can see that Mr. Bud Lee here needs to whisk you away so that you can get some rest, and we thank you for taking the time out to talk to Adult DVD Empire. We wish you continued success and happiness.
Asia Carrera: Thank you for having me!
